Here at Compete we are looking for someone who enjoys sunsets, long walks on the beach, and building great web applications.

Here's a little bit about us, and what we are looking for:  Compete, Inc. is a market research company and Compete.com, its crown jewel web app, currently gets over 2M unique visitors per month and is growing by leaps and bounds.  The Web Development team, which we'd like you to be a part of, consists of a handful of engineers, and we are looking to add someone ready to play a critical role in expanding Compete.com's look & feel, usability and functionality.  We want someone who loves creating stuff, and is passionate about the web.  Someone curious and innovative.  Energetic and opinionated.  And someone with the following skills and traits:

  • Stellar HTML/CSS skills.  Your ability to hand-code markup and style-sheets should be the stuff of legends.
  • Ability to take a given comp and make it look *better* in the browser (and, of course, across various different browsers).  An engineer here described it perfectly when he said that, if our designer is the penciller, you would be the inker.
  • Very strong JavaScript skills, and experience building rich UIs with frameworks like jQuery/Prototype/YUI
  • Design skills. You know typefaces, and whitespace. Color and archetypes.  You are probably familiar with the Aesthetic-Usability effect.
  • A general understanding of best practices for building and maintaining software on a team.  You take pride in the code you write, and you hate copy-n-paste.
  • Experience with OSS and/or a few side projects.  Show us your work (screenshots are good, URLs are great).
  • LAMP programming skills a big plus.  Think Python, Ruby, PHP.  Not having these does not preclude you from this position, but they will get you lots of bonus points.

Now, while we feel pretty strongly about the requirements above, here are some things we don't necessarily care about:

  • There's no specific minimum number of years of professional experience required.  While we'd prefer someone with a few years of real-world experience (see comment above about best practices for maintaining code), if you've been building web apps in your spare time since the 4th grade, that probably counts as experience too.
  • Your education.  Just about anybody can get a college degree.
  • Every technology you've used since your mom put a keyboard in front of you (Cobol and VB6 anyone?)

That's it for us.  Your turn now.  Write us at careers@compete.com to tell us about yourself, show us your work, or just say hi.

For immediate consideration, please e-mail your resume to careers@compete.com.
