COMPETE BRIEF: RESTATEMENT OF TRAVELZOO ANALYSIS

In its last Travel Research Brief, Compete overstated its estimate of the site traffic of Travelzoo.com. Feedback from our readers and an audit of our analysis helped us identify the problem. We regret this error and invite you to view updated data on Travelzoo as well as some additional research on the growing travel site.

Compete estimates that Travelzoo.com averaged 2.2 million U.S. unique visitors from September 2007 through September 2008. Heading into the slower Fall/Winter travel season, Travelzoo.com stands at 2.4 million unique visitors, 6% above last year’s audience level and representing healthy growth.

Chart 1

One of Travelzoo’s most popular content areas is its Top 20 Deals page, a weekly aggregation of travel deals offered on the web. Travelzoo sends an RSS style email each Wednesday morning, alerting its distribution list of the latest offered promotions. As such, Wednesday is typically the most trafficked day of the week on Top20.Travelzoo.com. The Top 20 Deals page has shown significant growth since January 2nd, the first Wednesday of 2008. As of July the page was attracting 3X what it did at the beginning of the year and activity level in seasonally slowing August remained at 2X the index.

Chart 2

While revised downward from our initial estimates, Travelzoo still attracts an audience in the millions that has grown from its year ago levels. Many Travelzoo visitors leverage the site for its lists of travel deals, suggesting that its prospects are on the lookout for a bargain. As such, advertisers partnering with Travelzoo should hone their landing page content to meet this audience’s needs. A tailored landing page highlighting all of the best current sales and promotions would improve user experience and hit consumers at the right moment.
